Air France 777 Business

Air France 777 Business Class Seat Most of Air France’s 777s — including the one I flew — have a 1-2-1-across reverse herringbone seat that gives you TONS of space and solid privacy. KLM’s business class seat on their flagship 787-9 is almost exactly the same. This is my review of Air France business class, flying a Boeing 777-300ER from Paris to Dubai. As regular Head for Points readers will know, Air France and KLM will become Virgin Flying Club partners during 2019. I thought it was worth giving Air France a try to see what it offers if you choose to redeem your Virgin Atlantic miles with them. Air France features a reverse herringbone business class seat on the 777-300ER with 1-2-1 seating split over two cabins. I was seated in row five of the front cabin. The seat is comfortable and I like this version of the reverse herringbone seat, with a swinging TV monitor, over the Aeromexico version. The 777 I flew was showing its age, and over the coming years parts of Air France’s 777 fleet will be phased out in favor of newer planes like Airbus A350s. One warning: Air France has a few different business class seat products flying.

This Air France Business Class Review on a 777-300ER is thanks to my husband's organizing a surprise trip for us to Paris, our very first trip without our son, made possible by close friends who looked after him.

Air France 777-300ER Business Class Cabin and Seat Selection

Air France has several 777-300ER layouts; ours was a 4 cabin plane, with 58 business class seats in two business class cabins. The forward small cabin is rows 3-6, while we were in the main business class cabin, which is rows 9-20. The seats are in a 1-2-1 configuration, where every seat has direct aisle access. The window seats, A and L, are ideal for solo travelers, while couples who don't need a window will prefer E and F. We were in 15E and 15F.

Air France Business Class Seat and Bed Quality

Air france 777 business class seats pictures

The Air France Business Class seat is from Safran (which acquired Zodiac Aerospace in 2018), so it will be familiar to anyone who's flown Cathay Pacific Business Class, EVA Business Class, and similar business class products. With the exception of JAL Sky Suite Business Class window seats, this is the type of business class seat I most prefer, even more so than Qatar Qsuites Business Class, which, while very private, has a cramped footwell area due to the way the tray table is stowed.

The seat is 21.5 inches wide, and on each seat was a blanket and pillow.

.

There's a small storage cabinet at shoulder height that contains the headphones, room for small items such as a phone or tablet, and even a mirror on the inside of the door–a nice touch that is surprisingly rare in business class.

.

The power outlet isn't as conveniently placed as on Cathay Pacific or EVA; it's by the magazine rack, below knee level. I did like that there was already Evian bottled water stowed there, however.

.

The footrest connects with the reclined seat to form the flat bed. Except for takeoff and landing, the area below it can be used to store shoes or a small bag.

.

When fully reclined into a flat bed, it's quite long–nearly 79 inches (200 cm), which made it a good choice for my husband, who is 6'5.”

Air France Business Class Menus and Dining

Here's the menu for our flight:

.

We'd already dined in the Air France Lounge at JFK, where my husband had been served a terrible mushroom risotto, but I'd enjoyed a delicious main of shrimp with basil mozzarella flan:

The Verdict

While we were on an overnight flight, which from the East Coast to Europe makes for a short night and not enough sleep, I liked the Air France Business Class seat, which is from Safran (which acquired Zodiac). These are similar to the seats in Cathay Pacific Business Class and EVA Business Class, and I prefer them to the staggered seats in SWISS Business Class, Brussels Business Class, etc. While not as private, as, say, Qatar Qsuites Business Class, there's more space in the footwell, which I value more than the closing suite door, as it means I'm not constantly knocking my feet or legs against a tray table or the walls of the footwell.

The flight itself encountered a fair amount of turbulence, but absent that, I would have slept quite well.

We focused on maximizing sleep, so we didn't have the dinner on board, but the Air France Lounge serves a pre-flight dinner that offers the same appetizer and main courses that are served on board.

Pre-flight service was slowed somewhat by the full flight, but was pleasant and helpful.

If you've flown Air France Business Class recently, what was your experience?

This Review of Air France 777-300ER Business Class from CDG to New York JFK is part of a trip report including Le Bristol Paris, Le Meurice, the Shangri-La Paris, and Paris Michelin Star restaurants. I had never flown Air France Business Class, and I had pretty low expectations of the service and business class seat, although my wife assured me it was Air France's new business class, with a flat bed seat. I was surprised at the high quality of some aspects of this product, and disappointed by others.

Air France 777-300ER Business Class Cabin and Seat Selection
The Air France Business Class cabin was packed, and the passengers ranged from a crying baby to an old gentleman who must have been over 90 years old, so the flight attendants had to cover a lot of ground. The cabin had a very light and airy feeling, with 40 business class seats across 10 rows in a 1-2-1 configuration.

The smaller business class cabin had 4 rows and was directly behind La Premiere, Air France's First Class, while the larger business class cabin had 6 rows, with a galley area separating the two business class cabins. I'd recommend avoiding row 6, the last row of the first cabin, which is directly in front of the galley, and also row 9, the first row of the second cabin, which has lavatories right in front of it. Generally, I'd try to reserve seats in rows 3, 4 and 5 if possible, since the smaller business class cabin has the potential to be quieter, as it's right behind first class.

Here's my Air France Business Class YouTube Review:

Lax

Air France Business Class Seat
The seat was angled inside a compartment to face slightly toward the window. The compartment space
itself was quite large, and there was ample room toward the window for storage and shelf space. But
the seat is rather narrow at 21.5 inches, there was not much space between the seat and the aisle, and the angle of the seat felt a little strange.

The seat controls were very intuitive and simple.

For window seats, such as my seat 3A, there's a power outlet as well as a USB port located on the left hand side, underneath the compartment that the tray table folds out from, and near the pocket holding magazines.

Air France Business Class Service
Because the cabin was so full, service took a while, but eventually I was offered a hot towel, along with a
choice of orange juice, water and champagne, and opted for the latter.

The service was either perfunctory or non-existent. I performed the transitioning of my seat to a flatbed, and vice versa, when needed. Overall the service was disappointing, though perhaps understandable in light of the crowded conditions. Then again, business class is mainly about the seat and bed. For good service, on many airlines, you really need to be flying first class.

Air France Business Class Menu and Food

Here's the menu for my Air France Business Class Paris CDG to New York JFK flight:

The asparagus mousse amuse bouche was fresh but quite bland, as were the accompanying crackers.

Air France 777 Business Class Seats

The appetizer was fantastic: potato salad with truffles, and foie gras with hazelnuts and port jelly. This was accompanied by a simple salad and roll. Just perfect.

The 15 hour lamb with fig and mustard sauce was succulent, tender and flavorful, even though it certainly doesn't look like much in the photo.

The cheese, especially the chevre, was creamy and delicious.

I finished with dessert and coffee. The mini desserts were very good for in-flight desserts, and my wife tells me that she had a memorable dessert even in economy some years back, on an Air France flight.

The light snack we had pre-arrival, however, was just passable, and served cold: a chicken and mushroom flan, some sweet peppers, and tomato-pesto focaccia. The soft chocolate cake with a small pot of creme anglaise was the highlight.

Air France Business Class IFE
The in-flight entertainment system was accessible by means of an easy-to- use handheld device next to
the seat. I chose to watch Rogue One and Moonlight. Overall, the English-language film selection was
pretty good.

Air France Business Class Bed
The flatbed area is very narrow, and was not really long enough for my feet. I’m not that wide, but I
barely fit the width of the bed. And the bed was very hard. The sleeping compartment is not totally
enclosed, with an open access to the aisle, which was a little distracting.

The Verdict
This product was hit-or- miss. The compartment is quite spacious and elegant for business, but the
flatbed is very narrow and hard–I definitely recommend bringing a Therm-a-rest mattress pad. The food was quite good, overall, while the service was terrible.
